February 24, 2012 — Canadian Blood Services is pleased to announce the return of the BloodTechNet Learning Competition. The second year of the competition opens today, offering $125,000 to lead, empower and support learning initiatives for Medical Laboratory Technologists interested in developing new skills in Transfusion Science.

Starting today, anyone can go to BloodTechNet.ca to submit ideas that will benefit Canadian MLTs who want to learn about Transfusion Science. A panel of judges will select the most promising ideas, and invite these finalists to submit details about their projects. After rallying support from their colleagues and friends, MLTs will vote on their favourite projects. The most popular ideas will have a chance to receive funding from the Learning Competition Fund.

The Learning Competition is an effort to find — and inspire — innovative learning initiatives for medical laboratory technologists who want to meet the challenges of a changing workplace. It was launched in response to survey findings investigating their experiences and expectations of Canadian of continuing education. The seven winning ideas in 2011 came from all parts of Canada, involved small, medium and large-budget learning projects that included videoconference series, serology workshops, concept posters and game-based learning.

"The Learning Competition lets MLTs create their learning networks and the kind of opportunities that they want to participate in," says Shanta Rohse, the organizer behind the BloodTechNet network. "We've had such a positive response to last year's competition that we are back with another $125,000 pledge."

Idea submissions will be accepted until March 19, 2012. Finalists will be announced April 9, 2012 and invited to submit their project details. Voting takes place between May 4 and May 11, 2012. Winners will be announced in May at the CSTM conference in Halifax.
