Continuing Competence Program
Competency Profile
The MLT Competency Profile outlines the competencies of Alberta MLTs. It is the foundation of the CCP and serves as the major resource and reference for the Self-Assessment. The HPA defines competence as the “capacity to apply judgment and purposeful action to work with clients to achieve and maintain desired health outcomes.” The MLT Competency Profile is a detailed and specific description of behaviors inherent in the profession and outlines knowledge, skills, judgments, and attitudes held by MLTs. Each MLT will possess a unique set of competencies specific to him/her and the workplace, setting, or practice. The degree of proficiency of each competency will vary among technologists.
The MLT Competency Profile is directly linked to the Medical Laboratory Technologists Standards of Practice, which evolved from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) Entry Level Competencies for MLTs (basis of the national certification examinations). The competencies defined in the MLT Competency Profile may be attained by MLTs in many different ways. Some competencies may be gained through experience and/or on the job training, while other competencies are gained through advanced training, education, and/or certification.
The purpose of the MLT Competency Profile is to:
- Outline the competencies of MLTs.
- Provide a foundational structure for the CCP.
- Provide a reference for ongoing self-assessment of competence.
- Serve as a reference for employers and other stakeholders highlighting the range of professional practice and competence of MLTs as members of the health care team.
- Be inclusive of all possible competencies possessed by MLTs.
- Represent the competencies all MLTs must achieve.
- Specify obligations and/or requirements of MLTs for third party agencies or any other outside party.
- Be permanent or static.
The College encourages members to submit suggestions and feedback to continually enhance and/or expand the current MLT Competency Profile.
To distinguish competencies required by all or most MLTs from those competencies only selectively required dependent upon an area of practice, each Band has been identified as containing either Core, Common, or Selective competencies.
